Hold Percentage Explained: What the Book Keeps From Every Market
The arithmetic, without the fog
Convert each price in a market to its implied probability and add them up. A fair market sums to one hundred percent. A real market sums to more, say one hundred and five percent, and that five points over is the overround, the raw material of hold. The book's actual hold on the event then depends on how the money was distributed, but the overround is the price of admission every bettor pays.
Worked plainly: if both sides of a coin flip are priced so each implies a fifty two point four percent chance, neither bettor is getting a fair coin. They are getting a coin the house skims. Do that maths on any market you bet regularly and the differences between books stop being abstract.
Why hold varies so much by market
Main lines on major events run lean. Competition between books is fiercest there, prices are compared publicly, and sharp money punishes a fat margin instantly. Parlays, player props, and obscure leagues run heavy, because comparison is harder, volume is lower, and the book is pricing with less information and more risk per bet.
That pattern tells a bettor where their effort pays. Grinding a tiny extra edge on a main line that already runs at a low hold is hard work. Moving a regular prop or parlay habit from a high hold book to a lower one can be worth more than a season of clever selections, and it requires no cleverness at all, just the comparison done once.
Hold is not the same as profit, and books will say so
Books point out, correctly, that overround is not realised profit. Promotions, winning runs by customers, and lopsided books where everyone backed the winner all cut into it. A market priced at five percent overround can still lose the book money on the day. That is true, and it does not change the bettor's side of the ledger at all.
From the seat placing the bet, the overround is a cost you pay on every ticket, win or lose, in expectation. Whether a particular book converts its margin into profit efficiently is their operational problem. Yours is simply to pay the lowest toll available for the road you are taking.
Reading hold before you open an account
Price the same five markets you actually bet, at the books you are considering, on an ordinary weekday, not during a promotion. Add up the implied probabilities and write the overround down next to each book's name. The table will differ from every review site ranking, because it is built from your markets at your times, which is the only version that applies to you.
Recheck it when a book changes its pricing team or its app. Holds drift. The book that was cheapest for your league last season can quietly become the expensive one, and loyalty to a toll booth is the one loyalty this market never repays.

Frequently asked questions
What is a normal hold percentage?
For main markets on major events at competitive books, the overround is often around four to six percent. Niche markets, props, and parlays can run far higher. There is no single normal figure, which is why pricing your own markets matters.
How do I calculate a market's overround?
Convert each outcome's decimal odds to implied probability by dividing one by the odds, then add the probabilities. Anything over one hundred percent is the overround, the margin built into that market's prices.
Does lower hold mean the book is worse at its job?
Not necessarily. Some books run lean margins and make it up on volume and customer numbers. Others run heavy margins on captive customers. Hold reflects a business choice about price versus volume, not competence at picking winners.
Why do parlays have such high hold?
Each leg of a parlay carries its own margin, and the margins multiply together. A three leg parlay built from fairly priced legs can still carry a very large combined overround, which is the real price behind the attractive headline payout.
